On Monday, Roblox announced that it would begin its first iteration of a 3D model called “Cube” and allow creators to create 3D objects using generated AI. The company also launched an open source version, so anyone can build it from the platform.
Announced at Roblox’s annual developer conference last year, the company is demonstrating its cube at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) late this afternoon.
Creators will be able to access Cube later this week. This includes the first tool, Mesh Generation.
Cube’s 3D mesh generation, currently available in beta, allows authors to “mesh” or 3D representation of an object, using a single prompt. For example, “Generate orange racing cars with black stripes.” creators can further adjust in-game items within Roblox Studio.
With the open source version of Cube 3D, anyone can customize, create plugins, or train models on their own datasets to train them to suit their needs.
Roblox has also announced three additional AI tools: text generation, text to speech, and speech-to-text. These features will be launched in the next few months.
Text generation tools allow developers to add text-based AI capabilities to their games. This includes giving players the option to talk to interactive non-player characters (NPCs).
Meanwhile, Text Two-Pick allows developers to add narration, talk to NPCs, or include captions that they talk to the game. Using text from audio allows players to use character commands.
The company explains other future plans that include launching mesh generation for more “complex” objects and scene generation. Scene generation tools, for example, encourage creators to create a perfect forest scene for AI, and to change the green leaves of the tree to show seasonal changes.
As Roblox said before last year, the long-term goal is to make 3D objects and scenes work perfectly, and is called “4D Creation.”
“The fourth dimension is the interaction between objects, the environment and people,” Nick Tornow, Vice President of Engineering at Roblox, told TechCrunch.

Like companies exploring generative AI tools, Roblox believes Cube will help creators work faster, allowing indie developers to take on bigger projects. The company has already released several AI tools, including texture generation and avatar creation.
Game AI tools are a hot topic, and several companies are making progress in this space. Most recently, Tencent launched an open source 3D generation model designed to generate 3D models via text prompts or 2D images.
However, the use of AI continues to raise concerns within the industry. As shown in a recent GDC report, 30% of game developers feel that the generated AI is having a negative impact on the game space. According to a survey by CVL Economics, 13.4% of game jobs could impact AI by 2026.
