Google Quantum AI COO CharinaChou, needs for government investment in quantum computing

Google Quantum AI COO, Charina Chou, has argued for government investment in the quantum computing market, claiming that technology cannot be successful on its own.

“Transtors… were funded by the US government’s basic research investment in science,” Chou explained while speaking at the SXSW conference in Austin on Wednesday.

“That’s what’s produced even the many advances we have in quantum computing today. It’s all based on basic science… No one is going to do this yourself. You can’t do it yourself. You have to have an entire community of researchers. And government investment in this is important,” she said.

Furthermore, Chou pointed out that China is currently outperforming the US by 2:1 in quantum research. Not only can it allow the US to fall behind in key regions, it could also break the encryption that protects today’s secure communications.

“It is important to note that we are expected to collect one or two orders of magnitude stronger computers than are needed for chemical materials. “And you’d want the United States to have that ability.”

Chou also spoke about the broader possibilities of quantum computing, the types of problems that can be solved, and other mysteries and misconceptions about technology.

She pointed out possibilities like cancer drug testing and created mathematical models of cells. Cryptographic breakdown; build better batteries and solar cells. Helping to resolve the climate crisis. Optimize everything from shipping routes to investments, fusion energy, and more efficient energy use.

“If you bring back only one message, that means that quantum computers can solve problems that are impossible for AI or supercomputers,” says Chou.
