CCR’s John Fogerty jokes about creating setlists using ChatGpt

Singer, songwriter and leader of Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR), John Fogerty is clearly catching up to the times. At SXSW’s keynote speech on Wednesday in Austin, Texas, the musician joked about using ChatGpt to decide which songs to play for the show.

In an interview conducted by Tom Morello (Rage Again The Machine and Audioslave), Fogerty was asked how he decided on a set list for a particular night, like the concert at SXSW the night before.

“I just go to ChatGpt or whatever,” Fogerty said, showing the audience laughing.

He then added, “You learn a lot about becoming a celebrity,” and he said he wanted people to enjoy themselves at the concert. “I want them to join. I want them to sing together.”

The interview also covered CCR’s history, music publishing rights, and the stories behind the band’s songs.

At one point, Fogerty also pointed out how to define how the medium used to consume music is presented.

“Songs have always been manifested by the medium in which they exist. In other words, the three-minute song was invented for 78 records. You just couldn’t put more things there,” he said. After that, the LP appeared and the CD appeared. This led to some people having far more songs, albums with 19 or 21 track albums. ” (He said he didn’t think this was a great idea. He added, “After six or seven songs, put it on the next record!”

Today, the medium we use to consume music is streaming. This means that distribution is more democratic in some respects, Morello said, but with thousands of new songs released daily, there is less funnel.

However, while CCR has over a billion streams, Fogerty says it’s “magic and amazing.”

“If your song is streaming, it means that young people are listening to it, especially to a considerable extent.
