Tesla has filed a trademark application for the term “Tesla Robotaxi” after the company’s previous attempt to secure trademarks for planned autonomous vehicle services.

The company originally applied for trademarks of the words “Robotaxi” and “Cybercab” in October 2024. The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) said last month that more detailed details were needed to be made to allow the “Robotaxi” trademark used by many other companies like Waymo, as TechCrunch first reported last month. The USPTO has suspended Tesla applications for “CyberCab” completely due to the number of other companies seeking to trademark various uses of the term “cyber.”

Tesla submitted three new applications of the more specific “Tesla Robotaxi” phrase to begin testing later this month in Austin, Texas. It aims to achieve trademarks that refer to and use Tesla’s planned autonomous driving room services, related mobile apps, and the vehicle itself.

It is unlikely that an application will be reviewed in time for its test. Trademark applications are usually available for several months before being assigned to an “examiner.”

Tesla also has applications pending applications for trademarks with the phrases “Robobus”, “Robus” and “Cyberbus.” During the event, CEO Elon Musk called the vehicle “Robovan.” However, Starship, an Estonian robot delivery company, already owns a trademark for the term.
