As consumers respond to Elon Musk’s political activities and the global protests they fueled, more Tesla owners are selling used vehicles.
In March, the number of used Tesla vehicles sold at Autotrader.com surged, reported Sherwood News, citing data from AutoTrader’s parent company, Cox Automotive. Numbers were particularly high in the last week of March when Tesla, which averaged over 13,000 used, was listed for sale. Not only is this a record, it’s also an increase of 67% from the same week of the previous year.
At the same time, sales of new Tesla vehicles have slowed down even as EV sales from other brands rose. According to the latest report from Kelley Blue Book, around 300,000 new EVs were sold in the US in the first quarter of 2025. This is an increase of 10.6% from the previous year. Meanwhile, Tesla’s sales fell in the first quarter, down almost 9% from the same period in 2024.
Automakers like GM and Hyundai are still behind Tesla. But they see an increase in growth. For example, the GM brand sold over 30,000 EVs in the first quarter, almost doubled the volume they had from a year ago, according to the Kelley Blue Book.
