This week, Google held the Google Cloud Cloud Next Conference at Las Vegas, unveiling a number of new features, including the next-generation AI processing chip called Ironwood and the latest AI model, Gemini 2.5 Flash.
They also announced a long list of AI startups that have signed to use the cloud. Among them are some of the most viewed startups in the world. As previously reported, this list includes Safe Superintelligence (SSI), a startup founded by Openai co-founder and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever.
It also includes:
Anysphere creates Uber and the popular AI-powered code editor cursors. Google says Cursor uses Anthropic’s Claude model on Google Cloud. Cursor was recently valued at $10 billion, sources told TechCrunch. Its biggest rival is probably Github Copilot, so Microsoft will become one of the top competitors.
Hebbia has been a hit in the legal industry as it uses AI to search large documents and answer questions. Andreessen Horowitz uses Google’s Gemini model while index ventures, Google Ventures, and Peter Thiel join the $130 million Series B, Google says.
Magic is building frontier models to automate coding and research. The Google Cloud choice could be somewhat evident considering that Alphabet’s Capitalg and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt were included as investors in the $320 million funding round in 2024. According to Google, you’re tapping Google Cloud on GPUS.
Physical Intelligence is working on developing basic software for robots and has a WHO roster of co-founders, including the extraordinary Lachy Groom of solo investors. In November, it raised $400 million in a $2 billion pre-money valuation from backers, including Sequoia, Jeff Bezos, Lux Capital and thriving Capital. Some of its founders have deep connections with Google, who previously worked for Google Deepmind, including Karol Hausman and Chelsea Finn.
Photoroom is one of the hottest AI startups in Paris, a European AI centre. It provides AI photo editing and uses Google Cloud’s VEO 2 video generation model and image model Imagination 3 from its text.
Synthesia creates very realistic AI avatars and builds products that use a variety of Google models. It raised $180 million in a $2.1 billion round in January, led by the NEA, but there was GV (formerly known as Google Ventures) among investors.
Overall, Google Cloud is gathering an impressive list of startups to enhance the race against Microsoft Azure and to some degree AWS for AI workloads.
Additionally, Google has announced that it has added LightSpeed to its VC partners in addition to the Sequoia and Y combination. Google Cloud accesses AI chips and models to portfolio companies from partner investors. LightSpeed’s AI portfolio company can qualify for $150,000 on cloud credits, Google said. So there are plans to convince new startups to join the cloud.
