The role of nickel in the future of safer electric vehicles

The role of nickel in the future of electric vehicle batteries is clear. It is richer and easier to acquire than widely used cobalt, and its higher energy density means that it has longer mileage between charges.

However, nickel is less stable than other materials in terms of cycle life, thermal stability and safety.

Researchers at the University of Texas Austin and Argonne National Laboratory aim to change that with new research diving deep into a nickel-based cathode, one of two electrodes that promote energy storage in electric vehicles’ batteries.

“High-nickel cathodes can revolutionize the EV market by offering a longer operating range,” said Arumugam Manthiram, professor at the Walker Mechanical Engineering and Texas Materials Institute and leader of the research published in Nature Energy.

“Our research provides a comprehensive analysis of thermal stability, essential for the development of safer EV batteries.”

Overcoming the challenges of using nickel in battery technology

The researchers performed over 500 measurements on 15 high-nickel cathode materials.

They found that each cathode has an important charge state that defines a safe operating limit. The strength and surface reactivity of the metal oxygen bonds affect this important condition. になったんです。 English: The first thing you can do is to find the best one to do.

If the material exceeds this limit, instability can creep up. This will cause catastrophic conditions of thermal runaway, which will greatly increase the risk of breakdowns and fire, when temperatures rise.

As part of the project, researchers developed a thermal stability index to quantify how materials react during thermal runaways.

Factors that influence cathode thermal stability include cathode composition, surface chemistry, nickel content, and crystal size.

Impact on safer and more efficient electric vehicle batteries

This study has broad implications and provides a path to safer and more efficient batteries that can support the growing demand for electric vehicles.

As the world moves towards cleaner energy solutions, these advances are important to make EVs more viable and attractive to consumers. になったんです。 English: The first thing you can do is to find the best one to do.

“Our work provides a roadmap for the industry to follow, ensuring that the high energy densities of these cathodes do not come at the expense of safety,” explained Zehao Cui, a researcher at Manthiram’s group.

Next step: Integrate electrolytes to enhance battery performance

For now, researchers will continue working on thermal stability and cathode. Next, bring the electrolyte into the equation.

Electrolytes are often liquid-based chemical constituents that shuttle charge-carrying ions back and forth.

It enables battery charging and evacuation functions to ensure reliable interaction between the electrolyte and the cathode. This is important to improve the safety of electric vehicle batteries.
