Plans have begun to recharge AI collaborations across Europe under the UK’s new contract with the EU.

It’s within reach in light of AI collaborations, healthcare treatments, clean energy technologies and sophisticated breakthroughs that could change lives across the UK.

Starting today, public research institutions can apply to host the UK AI Factory Antenna. This is a facility that, if approved, links UK research expertise to advanced supercomputers in Europe.

Access to cutting-edge computational power – the high-performance processing capabilities needed to process vast amounts of data and complex models – is the engine of AI progression.

AI collaboration helps you address critical industry challenges

The expansion of AI collaboration will help address global challenges such as climate change and disease, support the development of advanced AI systems used in healthcare and energy, and promote economic growth.

Expanding international collaboration at Compute is an important recommendation from the UK government’s AI Opportunity Action Plan. This is a blueprint to accelerate the use of AI across the economy.

Today’s announcement follows a new UK-EU agreement secured by the Prime Minister earlier this month.

It highlights the UK’s new partnership with Europe, provides real opportunities, promotes economic growth, and builds stronger relationships in national interests.

AI Minister Feryal Clark said: “Supercomputers are turbochargers of discovery. By strengthening our partnership with Europe, we are giving UK innovators the calculation power to solve climate and health challenges, expand the economy and realize plans for change.”

Gateway to cutting-edge supercomputers

This expression of interest, open to individual public research institutions or consortiums, is applied to the EuroHPC call, with up to 5 million euros available.

If successful, the selected organization will become the UK AI Factory Antenna, serving as a gateway to Europe’s top supercomputers through partnerships with AI factories on the continent. This site combines Euro HPC websites, training and access to software support.

This will enable UK scientists, startups and public institutions to build larger, more complex AI models, shorten development cycles, promote innovation and create sophisticated jobs across the country.

Clark explained: “This is fast processing. Putting the UK at the forefront of global AI. To have access to some of Europe’s most advanced systems, researchers and startups will lead cutting edge breakthroughs and strengthen the UK’s role as a trusted partner in international AI development.”

UK growth position in Advanced Tech and AI

The programme is based on the growing momentum in the UK’s AI computing infrastructure, with £44 billion invested in data centres since July last year, forming part of a wider effort to ensure the calculations needed to thrive in the age of AI.

This summer, the government will check out the following sites in the AI Growth Zone: It is a specialized cluster designed to host AI infrastructure, unlock billions of private investments and create thousands of skilled jobs.

These actions will be supported by Compute Strategy, a 10-year roadmap to increase national computing power by 21 times, scheduled for later this year.
