UK support projects to produce more sustainable aviation fuels

Passengers will enjoy a more environmentally friendly plane journey thanks to new support for the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) industry.

Sustainable fuel production helps to tackle emissions, establishing the UK as a clean energy superpower, allowing the UK to move faster with its expansion plans.

The UK government has announced consultations showing how it intends to support the green fuel sector and provide certainty to SAF producers. This is the latest step in the government’s plan to start economic growth for the aviation sector.

The role of SAF in green climates

The SAF industry is important for the future of aviation and offers sustainable alternatives to traditional jet fuels.

By reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 70% compared to fossil fuels, sustainable aviation fuels will play a key role in providing clean energy missions, enabling the UK to help expand the airport in line with its climate commitment.

Supporting investments in the low-carbon sector are also promising economic growth, as it is expected to support up to 15,000 new jobs by 2050 and provide £5 billion to the UK economy.

As this is still a new industry, today’s proposal addresses the current uncertainty of the sector by introducing a price guarantee for industry funds known as industry-funded price guarantees (RCM) to ensure a stable revenue stream for producers, even though SAF prices will fluctuate and help maintain the costs of airlines and Holiday Mars.

The UK’s position in decarbonized air travel

The proposal will help reduce risk, give investors the trust they need to invest in UK SAF plants, and help ensure the sector has the supply needed to strengthen the UK SAF industry.

The mechanism is also designed to limit costs and protect holiday makers and workers from significant cost increases, and the rise is expected to be in line with normal ticket price fluctuations.

Revenue certainty will be in parallel with the introduction of the SAF Mandate in January 2025. This requires an increase in aviation fuel to come from sustainable sources to support the industry by securing demand in the UK and promoting production.

This mission was one of the first to fall into law in the world, putting the UK at the forefront of a decarbohydrate air travel.

The revenue certainty mechanism combined with the power of attorney contributes to the country’s net zero goal and allows the aviation sector to continue to grow, including airport expansion.

This is also expected to promote significant investment in the SAF sector, create green jobs, and promote innovation and growth as part of the government’s change plan.

Aviation Minister Mike Kane said:

“As part of the plan for the change, these proposals will strengthen sustainable aviation fuel production in the UK, support thousands of green jobs, and strengthen expansion plans.”

The talks will take place from March 3rd to 31st, and the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (Revenue Support Mechanism) Bill will be published in Congress in the spring.

Other sustainable aviation fuel initiatives

This new support for the SAF will be built on the £63 million recently announced by the Prime Minister in his growth speech to boost the production of alternative fuels in the UK.

Additionally, last September, the department announced the Jet Zero Task Force, which refreshed and rejuvenated the Jet Zero Task Force, which serves as a driving force behind the changing way people fly. This coincides with the government’s mission to make the UK a clean energy superpower and kickstart the economy.

To further boost sustainable aviation, the UK has led the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) claim for new carbon limits on aircraft.

This helps reduce emissions and fuel costs and benefit passengers and the planet. Aircraft noise regulations have also been tightened since 2029, keeping planes quiet when they take off and land.

Karen Dee, CEO of AirportSuk, concluded: “SAF plays an important role in hospital discharge aviation. The revenue certainty mechanism not only ensures that the UK has access to adequate supply, but also ensures that it can benefit from thousands of jobs and billions of investments.

“Through these investments, the UK’s global aviation connectivity will expand sustainably within the net zero target and play an increasing role in economic growth. This is the priority of governments to promote national prosperity.”
