WordPress unveils Telex, an experimental AI development tool

Web Publishing Platform WordPress introduces an early version of its AI development tools. Matt Mullenweg, co-founder and Automattic CEO of WordPress, is described as “V0 or adorable, but especially for WordPress only.” A reference to V0 and the popular “Vibe Coding” service for building software using AI interfaces. Mullenweg introduced a new WordPress AI tool called Telex, along with other AI experiments, at the WordCamp US 2025 conference in Portland last week.

During his keynote speech, Mullenweg briefly demonstrated how the telex that make up a WordPress website can create Gutenberg blocks, or modular bits such as text, images, and columns. He showed off how one developer can use new tools to create simple marketing animations.

Available in its own domain at Telex.Automattic.ai, Telex is labeled “experimental.” To use the service, enter the prompt for the type of content block you want to generate. This is returned as a .zip file that can be installed as a plugin to your WordPress site or WordPress Playground. (The latter is a platform that allows you to run WordPress in a web browser on a hostless device.)

The launch follows WordPress’ announcement that it is forming an AI team to manage the development of AI products that align with the long-term goals of the WordPress project.

Early testers discovered that there is still a way for Telex to go, as some test projects have failed or require additional work to run properly.

Mullenweg emphasized that Telex is still a prototype, but was bullish about the possibility that AI could promote WordPress missions over time.

“When you think of democratized publications, as embedded, it’s very core to WordPress’ mission, requiring knowledge such as coding, and making people accessible in a fundamentally open way.

The CEO also admitted that some of the advancements in AI could be scary given the hype and the story that AI could be a bubble, but that didn’t overturn his excitement.

“At the heart of it, there’s something about it, and it’s so possible,” he said of AI. “Building for WordPress is a very exciting time.”

Mullenweg also showed off another simpler AI tool built in an hour or two hours of work on a contributor’s day, providing WordPress help assistants within the browser. He then spoke about Perplexity’s comet, his favorite AI browser, which allows users to interact with WordPress through its interface.

Mullenweg has only provided simple updates for the legal drama surrounding the company over the past year or so. The company is engaged in a dispute with hosting provider WP Engine. This claims that Mullenweg is profiting from the work WordPress is doing without making enough contributions. Therefore, we would like to license the WP Engine to the WordPress trademark. This says it will confuse customers about their relationship with the company.

“The quick update is that it’s going through the legal system. We trust the fairness of the courts,” Mullenweg said. “If there was commentary, I just said there was a settlement meeting and I came.
