Zoox on Amazon begins testing AVS at Atlanta and continues with Waymo

Amazon’s self-driving car unit Zoox is about to begin testing its self-driving car in Atlanta, Georgia.

Zoox told TechCrunch on Tuesday that it will complete the “early mapping phase” in Atlanta and begin autonomous driving later this summer.

Atlanta is the seventh US city where Zoox is testing its vehicles. The company announced that Waymo, along with partner Uber, announced its testing plan in a day. This said it will begin offering its own Robotaxis to Atlanta early access users ahead of its massive public launch this summer.

Zoox takes a systematic approach to deploying its promised Robotaxi services. In Atlanta, like in other cities, the company used the modified Toyota Highlanders to record the geometry and traffic light locations of each road. It is only after those steps that Zoox can begin testing autonomous vehicle technology in its area.

The company is proceeding to test its own robotic acid tests without safety operators in California cities such as Foster City and San Francisco and Las Vegas, Nevada. Zoox plans to be released at Robotaxi in San Francisco and Las Vegas by the end of this year.

As part of that process, the company is solving kinks with self-driving vehicle technology. Zoox issued a recall in March, with the aim of fixing issues encountered during testing by the Autonomous Driving Test Fleet in May, in connection with software updates.

This story has been updated to include information from Zoox that is not in the press release about Atlanta mapping and other data already being collected.
