The 17-year-old was charged with eight crimes following the incident on a Jetstar Airways plane.

The teenager was arrested in Australia after boarding a commercial aircraft equipped with a loaded shotgun, police said.

The 17-year-old was taken into custody after being overwhelmed by crew and passengers after an incident at Avalon Airport, about 60 km (37 miles) from Melbourne on Thursday, Victoria police said.

Neither of the approximately 160 passengers or crew on the Jetstar Airlines plane were injured.

Police have charged eight crimes in teenagers, including putting safe operation of aircraft and possessing firearms at risk.

When the teen appeared in Juvenile Court on Friday, police alleged that he planted fake homemade explosives and threatened passengers and crew, the Australian Broadcasting Company reported.

Victoria Police Principal Michael Reid told reporters Thursday that the teenager was overwhelmed by several passengers.

“Undoubtedly, this would have been a very scary incident for the passengers on that plane, and the Victoria Police really praise the passengers for the courage they were able to overwhelm the man,” Reed said.

Barry Clark, one of the passengers who worked on the suspect, told local media that he was caught in the action after he realized the suspect was upset while discussing the firearm with flight attendants.

“I saw the butt of the barrel. When I saw the full gun, we said we were in trouble here and saw it towards her chest, so well, I thought I had to do something,” Clark said in an interview with Network10.

“This is all happening in seconds. So I stood quietly. He had my back on me, a young girl facing me, and the gun was visible,” Clark said.

“But if I went sideways and pushed the gun away from him, at least if it disappeared, it would come out on the side of the plane and knowing there was no one there.”
