Black-cap captain Mitchell Santner is ready to adapt to his Champions Trophy favorites in the Dubai Finals.
New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner says midmatch communication and adaptability on the pitch against India in Sunday’s Champions Trophy Final could be key to success.
The final in Dubai will determine the winners of eight countries’ tournaments in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.
India has proposed that it has the advantage of winning all four matches in Dubai, where it is based, after refusing to tour Pakistan due to political tensions.
“We need to have an open mind about how the pitch plays and we need to adjust accordingly,” Santner told reporters on Saturday.
“Take these communications back to the group. What do you think is a good score? It could be 300 wickets, but I don’t know yet, but it could also be 250 different winning scores.
“So I think there’s a period of time throughout this game on both sides that are under pressure for a period of time, but if you can withstand and get through, that might be easy,” he added.
The highest total in Dubai in this 50-over tournament was Australia’s 264 in the semi-finals, with India overhauling the score with 11 balls.
New Zealand went to India with 44 runs at the final group meeting at the venue, which restricted opposition to 249 before Blackcap was fired for 205.
“That’s where you learn,” Santner said. “We know India will probably be on the same team, so I think we have to be ready and adapt to what’s coming.”
Will the spin win India or New Zealand Day?
India played four spinners in the final two matches on a slow pitch that helped the slow bowler.
India’s Varun Chakravarthy returns a 5-42 number with his mystery spin in his final match against Kiwis, remaining a strong threat in the final.
“He’s clearly a world class bowler we saw here and we’ve seen it with the IPL and that little mystery,” said the left-arm spinner Santner.
“It was the first time some people have faced him. They’ll learn the other day. If the pitch plays in a similar way, it’ll be a challenge with all three other spinners.”
The intertwined schedule of the tournament is highly controversial with teams coming and leaving the United Arab Emirates from Pakistan while India is in place.
New Zealand defeated South Africa in the Lahore semi-finals and returned to Dubai.
“It was a bit of a shock,” Santner said of the temperatures in the two cities.
“For us, it’s been 10 degrees in the last four days. But obviously, I think the guys are getting pretty good from the semi-final victory.”
Fast bowler Matt Henry is competing against time to recover in the final after awkwardly landing on his right shoulder while he was in the field in the semi-finals.
“Matt will have a bowl just to see how he is,” Santner said. “Yeah, then I think we’ll call after that.”
New Zealand is aiming to win the tournament in 2000, when they beat India in the final in 2000.
New Zealand also beat India in its first World Test Championship final in 2021.
“Hopefully we’re lucky for the third time,” Santner said.
“But we know that India will be a challenge tomorrow.”
