X (formerly Twitter) was hit by a major cyber attack on March 10, 2025, leading to significant service disruption. According to DownDetector, users have begun to notice the issue of peaking at 6am Eastern time of around 41,000 incidents. Both the X app and the website were affected, and many users were unable to access the platform.

Targeted Cyber Attack Hit X: Elon Musk refers to nation-states or coordinating groups

Elon Musk confirmed the attack in X’s post, saying, “There was a massive cyberattack on X. We are attacked every day, but this was done with many resources. Large, coordinated groups and/or countries are involved.” His statement shows the scale and severity of the situation.

“We had a massive cyber attack (still) (still) and we get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. One of the large, coordinated groups and/or countries involved. Trace…” Musk wrote to X.

The Hacker Group Dark Storm team has argued for liability for distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks. The group, which emerged in 2023, is linked to various attacks and is known for integrating with Palestinian sentiments. Also, some reports suggest possible ties with Ukraine or Russia. Their strategies usually involve overwhelming, busy websites to destroy services.

X went through multiple confusion all day. At least three major outages were reported, with the most severe outbreaks occurring between 11:15am and 1:15pm Eastern time. Users faced frequent buffering and error messages, making it difficult to use the platform during those times.

X’s technical team has been actively working to reduce the impact of attacks and restore stable service. X has faced cyber threats in the past, but the scale and coordination of this particular incident has sparked concerns about the involvement of state-sponsored actors or well-organized groups. Research is underway to identify sources and enhance platform defenses.

The attack has been added to the growing list of security challenges faced by social media platforms, highlighting the pressing need for stronger cybersecurity measures to protect digital space.
