The former National ODI captain is in a stable condition after suffering cardiac arrest in a Dhaka Premier League match on Monday.

Former Bangladeshi captain Tamim Iqbal has regained consciousness and is talking to his family after suffering a major heart attack during a domestic match, cricket officials told AFP news agency.

Tamim, 36, was leading the Mohamedan Sports Club in a 50 Over Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League (DPL) match when he was rushed to a nearby hospital after experiencing serious chest pain on Monday.

“He’s better now. He spoke to his family and walked temporarily in the hospital,” the club’s official Tarikul Islam said Tuesday.

Enamur Hak, a physical therapist in Mohamedan, said Tamim is in a stable state and is likely to be transferred to another medical facility soon.

“We had to go to the hospital right away to save his life. Fortunately we did that,” Enamur told AFP.

Tamim was in danger when rushed to the hospital, Rajeev Hasan, medical director of the facility where Tamim was treated, told reporters on Monday.

He also said Tamim would need to undergo surgery to implant a stent to clean up blockage of the artery.

News of Tamim’s health crisis has poured in support from the world of cricket.

“Please pray that my brother Tamim will recover quickly and return to the game!” longtime teammate Shakib al-Hasan wrote in a social media post.

Tamim’s heart attack came on the same day as Shakib’s 38th birthday, but the all-around said he couldn’t enjoy the opportunity due to the news.

Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh similarly offered his “prayer and wishes”.

“You’ve faced tough opponents before and come out stronger. This isn’t different either. I hope for a quick recovery.

Tamim represented Bangladesh in 391 matches between formats between 2007 and 2023 and was the captain of the day.

He has recorded over 15,000 runs and is the only Bangladesh to record in all three international formats over centuries.
