These are important events on the 1,139th day of the Russian Ukrainian War.
This is where things stand on Tuesday, April 8th.
Fineting
The Russian Ministry of Defense said that the units intercepted and destroyed 19 Ukrainian drones in one night, of which 13 were destroyed in the Azov Sea. The ministry also said that Ukraine has attacked Russia’s energy infrastructure six times in the last 24 hours despite a mutually agreed suspension on an energy strike. The ministry said the attacks collided with electricity facilities and power facilities in the Ukrainian and Donetsk regions that control Russia’s Rostov, Bolognez and Bryansk regions as well as parts of Moscow. Regional authorities say Ukrainian drones are being suppressed by Russian air defense systems that have been damaged in the Krasnodar region of southwestern Russia. The Russian troops controlled the Katerinivka settlement in the eastern Donetsk region of Ukraine, the state communications agency RIA reported, citing the Ministry of Defense. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has denied Ukrainian claims that Russia was fired for civil infrastructure after a fatal attack on the central Ukrainian city of Krivi Li, which killed 20 people, including nine children. According to general staff from the Ukrainian army, Russian forces have conducted multiple attacks on villages around the eastern Ukrainian town of Pokrovsk.
Ceasefire
Russian President Vladimir Putin supports the ceasefire, but “a huge number” of questions remain unanswered, Peskov told reporters. He also said there is a common understanding between Russia and the US that mutual contact should continue. President Donald Trump said he was “not happy” to Russia for bombing Ukraine “like crazy.” However, he also said that both Kiev and Moscow were “somewhat close” in the deal.
Politics and diplomacy
Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Julia Swillidenko said Kiev’s team is scheduled to travel to Washington this week and said the US will discuss a deal that provides access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals. Kiev launched an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Tuesday after last week’s missile strike against Krivii RIH, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrisibikh called for a “robust international response to Russian atrocities” in X. For the first time, Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelenki confirmed the existence of Ukrainian troops in Russia’s Belgorod region. “We continue to have active operations in enemy border areas, but this is absolutely justified,” Zelenskyy said in his evening video address.
