Openai is reportedly building a secret social network that rivals X and Meta

According to sources familiar with the company’s plans, Openai is working on a new social network built around ChatGpt.

Verge reports that Openai is already developing an internal prototype for its social feed that is heavily leaning towards image generation with ChatGPT. The project is still in its early stages, but CEO Sam Altman has been seeking external feedback on the possibility.

“The project is still in its early stages, but it is said that there is an internal prototype focused on image generation for ChatGpt, which has a social feed. CEO Sam Altman has personally asked outsiders for feedback on the project,” Verge reported.

It is unclear exactly what the final product will look like. It may not launch as a standalone app, as a new layer within ChatGpt. That ambiguity has not stopped speculation, especially after Altman jokingly responded to Meta’s push to AI social apps, then jokingly responded, “It’s okay, I’ll do a social app.”

The prototype reportedly focuses on allowing users to create and share content, particularly images, using CHATGPT. It’s part of a social feed, part of an AI sandbox, all eyes are about how this can change the position of Openai in a space that is currently dominated by the X and Zuckerberg meta of Mask.

Why is it important?

As Openai moves forward with social apps, it could challenge two biggest tech platforms on the home turf, and invert the advantages of AI training. X and META are already training the model using real-time user data. Openai doesn’t have that – yes. Social layers can fill that gap and provide new ways to create, share, and engage AI-powered content for millions of users. It’s about not only defeating rivals, but building the next data engine for AI itself.

This move will mark Openai’s strategic change, which has so far been apart from social space. However, if it is released, this new product could offer two major benefits. One is direct competition with platforms that already use AI to drive engagement, and two is access to real-time user data. That’s what Mask and Meta already rely heavily on training their respective AI models, Grok and Llama.

Musk recently integrated X with Xai to make the relationship between social engagement and AI training more clear. Meta is expected to do something similar by adding social feeds to future standalone AI apps. Since ChatGpt is already one of the most downloaded apps in the world, OpenAI is not much needed to test new features for millions of users. In particular, it utilizes the type of virus content that the platform is already popular, such as Studio Ghibli-style image trends.

Another major AI lab source noted that other companies are paying close attention to how Grok is being used to drive viral posts. “Everyone was jealous of Grok’s integration with X,” they said. “In particular, how do you create virus tweets by making people say stupid things?”

Altman’s rivalry with Mask hasn’t even been calm at all. In February, Musk offered to buy Openai for $97.4 billion. “No, thank you, but I’ll buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if necessary,” Altman said.

Whether this project launches or not, it shows how Openai thinks about the next phase. In addition to building smarter models, the company appears to be looking for ways to gather fresh, human-generated content at scale and get users to engage in the process.
