Development StoryThe developed story,

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or the PKK, announced it was planning to disband and disarm it in a move that promises to end decades of conflict with Turkey.

The move was announced Monday by FiRAT News Agency, a media outlet close to the group. Part of the new peace initiative with Ankara was designed to end 40 years of violence, with plans to dissolve the PKK just days after convened party assembly in northern Iraq.

Following Friday’s assembly, the group said it had reached a “historic” decision to be soon shared with the public.

Firat reported that a statement was read out during Congress, outlining the “viewpoints and proposals” of PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan.

In February, Ocaran, who has been in prison since 1999, asked the group to abandon their arms and disband to end the conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives since the 1980s.

The banned PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey and most western provinces, announced a ceasefire a few days later, but set conditions for dissolution, including establishing a legal mechanism for peace negotiations.
