BOSTON (AP) — Harvard on Monday stopped funding grants in response to recent threats from the education sector, highlighting the reforms it was implementing, but warned not to move “its core, legally protected principles” surrounding fear of retaliation.
A letter from Harvard President Alan Gerber detailed how institutions have made major changes in leadership and governance over the past year and a half. During the reforms, Gerber said “a strategy to combat anti-Semitism and other prejudices.”
Last week, the Department of Education threatened a freezing grant with a massive Trump escalation Fighting against Ivy League School. The administration previously frozen $2.2 billion in federal grants to Harvard, and Trump said Excludes schools Tax-free status.
Gerber warned that changing efforts are “harmed, threatened and threatened by the federal government’s overflowing with constitutional freedoms at private universities and continued compliance with Harvard’s laws.”
“In line with the law and our own values, we continue to pursue necessary reforms, consult with our stakeholders, and are always in compliance with the law,” writes Gerber. “However, Harvard will not nucleate legally protected principles from fears of unfounded federal retaliation.”
A spokesman for the education department did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
In a call with a reporter last week, Department of Education officials denounced Harvard University of “serious failure.” A person who spoke to the reporter on condition of anonymity said Harvard allowed anti-Semitism and racism to perpetuate anti-Semitism and racism, waived strict academic standards and failed to allow various opinions on campus.
To qualify for the new grant, Harvard must negotiate with the federal government to prove that it meets the administration’s requirements.
This demand comes amidst a pressure campaign targeting several other well-known universities. The administration cut off money to universities including Columbia University, University of Pennsylvania and Cornell Universityseeking compliance with Trump’s agenda.
The White House says it is targeting campus anti-Semitism after Palestinian protests that swept US university campuses last year. It also focuses on the participation of trans athletes in women’s sports. And the attack on Harvard has been invoked increasingly with university diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, along with questions about freedom of speech and thinking by conservatives on campus.

In a letter Monday, Gerber tried to rebuttal many allegations made by the education department. He argued that entry to Harvard was based on “academic excellence and commitment” and that there was no “either based on race, ethnicity or other characteristics” when it came to employment, or that there was no “ideological litmus test.”
Gerber also rejected the proposal that Harvard is a partisan institution, saying he was unaware of evidence suggesting that international students are “more likely to cause confusion, violence or other misconduct than any other student.”
