Chime Financial paid the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks about $33 million over three years to wear the logo as a patch on the player’s jersey.
The Mavericks finalized the Jersey deal in 2020 along with “specific other sponsorships and publicity rights,” but no terms were announced. CNBC then cited NBA officials and reported that the league’s patch sponsorship ranges between $2 million and $20 million per season, depending on the market size.
Chime, a San Francisco-based fintech company that offers online banking services such as direct deposits and credit cards, is set to make its debut at NASDAQ soon. Cynthia Marshall, CEO of Mavericks from 2018 until December last year, is registered with Chime’s board of directors, so the company contains details of the arrangement in the related party transactions section of the submission.
The company said it paid the Mavericks $10.5 million in 2022, $11.5 million last year and $11.2 million last year.
Marshall told CNBC in 2020 that the decision to choose a chime for the jersey patch came because the team was trying to fill the official sponsorship slot. The logo is on display around the American Airlines Center where the Mavericks play their home games.
“We wanted people who were doing well and growing as a business,” Marshall said. “It’s the perfect fit.”
A day after the Mavericks shocked the NBA world by earning the right to draft the draft lottery and Duke University’s top pick Cooper flag, Chime’s IPO filing filed the land. The Mavericks were only 1.8% likely to land a top pick based on where they finished in the rankings. ESPN reported Wednesday that Mavericks had plans to draft Flag and did not consider the possibility of trading him.
It was a very accidental event turnover for the front office and ownership team, but since trading the franchise’s cornerstone Luka Doncic in February, it has been thoroughly criticized for several months, in return, bringing back old star Anthony Davis.
Longtime owner Mark Cuban sold a majority stake in the Mavericks to casino owner Miriam Adelson and her family in 2023.
In October, Mavericks announced a multi-year extension of their chime deal, agreeing to showcase the brand and company’s products more widely. One new aspect was the creation of Chime Lane, “a dedicated entrance with exclusive benefits for Chime members in the Mavs game” and a dedicated entrance to selecting events in AAC.”
