College Park, Md. (AP) — Kermit The Frog knows he is green or graduated from university and has graduated into the real world, especially in a time of economic uncertainty and political turmoil.

Members of the 2025 class at the University of Maryland will receive their diplomas on Thursday night and will ring their ears from the amphibious muppets.

The university announced in March that Kermit, founded in 1955 and became the centre of the Muppet franchise, will be the starting speaker this year. He is neither a stranger nor a school.

Muppets creator Jim Henson graduated from Maryland in 1960. In a family economics major, he made an original frog doll and a table tennis ball cut in half from one of his mother’s courts, according to a university statement. Henson passed away in 1990.

Sitting on the bench, the bronze statues of Henson and Kermit are a well-known feature of the College Park campus.

In the video, announcing the Speaker’s Pick, Kermit is described as an environmental advocate, bestselling author, international superstar, and champion who believes in creativity, kindness and the impossible.

His speaker Bio calls him “stage, screen, swamp star.”

“We are excited that our graduates and their families will experience globally significant frog optimism and insights at such a meaningful time in our lives,” University President Daryl J. Pines said in a statement.

The statement also cited the beloved frog itself. “There’s no way these feet can be happier than talking at the University of Maryland. I know that the 2025 class will be a better place to jump into the world.
