Instagram finally allows you to relocate the grid

Instagram announced Thursday that it is testing how users can finally relocate the grid and quietly post to their profiles without showing content in their users’ feeds. The social network is also launching a new initiative to support new creators, as well as the ability to stream songs directly from Spotify to Instagram notes.

According to Instagram, the ability to rearrange the grid is one of the most frequently requested features. This update allows users to reposition profile posts to customize the appearance of the grid. Until now, posts to your profile have appeared in chronological order, and pinning your posts is the only way to keep your old content at the top.

The idea behind this feature is to provide a way for users to make the grid layout more aesthetically pleasing, or highlight specific content over other content.

The announcement is no surprise as Instagram head Adam Mosseri said in January that the company was about to roll out its features.

It’s worth noting that we saw Instagram developing features in 2022, but we’ve been shelved the idea for a while. Fast forward to 2025 and Instagram is ready to start updating immediately.

Instagram says it is testing the feature for the ability to quietly post content without broadcasting it to follower feeds and will soon be rolled out more widely.

In a blog post, Mosseri wrote, “Creative expressions can feel intimidating, especially when feeding something.” That’s why we’re introducing new features that make it easy for users to share content without being overlooked.

Of course, this feature may not be used by some people, like creators and celebrities, who want a lot of likes on their posts. It’s for people who are focused on building their profiles without the pressure to do it.

This feature is somewhat similar to Trial Reels, an Instagram feature that allows creators to publish videos that are not visible to their followers and test new content. On Thursday, Instagram shared that 40% of creators posted reels frequently after trying out trial reels.

Mosseri says the purpose of the two new creative features announced today is to help users “have the added flexibility in how and where content will be displayed, helping them create and share without pressure.”

The new Spotify integration allows users to share their songs they are listening in real time with Instagram’s Notes streaming service, and have their followers check out what music they are watching.

The company has also announced that it will launch a draft, an initiative that invests in emerging talent. Through the draft, Instagram will work with creators to provide support, including financial support, connections, collaborative imagery, and collaboration opportunities.

An Instagram spokesperson told TechCrunch via email that Drafts is not a dedicated creator fund, but that Instagram “works closely with creators to provide the best support for each unique creative project needs.”
