A representative from Lake Superior Zoo in Minnesota said the brown bear has received the largest dental crown in history.

A bear named Tundra fractured one of his four main canines and needed the first unparalleled metal crown for protection. The vet successfully completed an hour of surgery at the zoo on June 23rd, and installed a specially designed silver cap.

“The brown bear tundra just made dental history!” a representative from Lake Superior wrote in an Instagram post. “We are pleased to share that the Tundra has officially received the first full metal crown placed on a bear. It is also the largest veterinary crown created in the world!”

The Tundra first destroyed the right dog in 2023. Zoo dentists first treated the bear by giving roots or rivers, but when the tundra later damaged the same tooth, the zoo team determined that a full coverage crown was needed, according to a statement released by the zoo.

Creature Crown, a specialized veterinary dental company based in Idaho, has created a new crown for the tundra from wax casts on injured teeth, the Associated Press reported.

A six-year-old brown bear (Ursus arctos) weighs about 800 pounds (360 kilograms) and when standing on two legs, it reaches approximately 8 feet (2.4 meters). To protect the staff, the tundra was sedated and a new crown was installed. The armed response team at Lake Superior was also on alert when the veterinarian dentist worked in case Tundra woke up before his procedures were finished, but he didn’t, reported the Associated Press.

The surgery is successful and the tundra is eating normally again. His new silver full coverage crown should protect your dog from further damage and bacterial infections.

“He’s shining a bit on his smile right now,” Caroline Rootley, the zoo’s marketing manager, told The Associated Press.

Editor’s Note: This article has been updated to modify the materials used for bear crowns, from titanium to taladium metal.
