Florida seniors are making up the growing portion of the state’s unpopulated population as the housing crisis continues, David Jones reports for WESH.

“664 homeless people were counted in January, according to data from the Central Florida Homeless Services Network, an umbrella organisation of homeless advocacy groups in Orange, Osceola and Seminole Counties.

Residents of manufactured homes, a long-standing reliable source of affordable housing for the elderly, find themselves facing steep land rent hikes as more mobile home parks are being acquired by institutional investors. Meanwhile, “rent for the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan area, which consists of Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Lake counties, averaged $1,553 in April, according to Apartmentlist.com.” According to Martha, CEO of the Homeless Services Network, “There are national estimates that say that they continue to see more seniors on the streets and that numbers could increase over 15 years.
