Meta is frozen employment in AI organizations after rebuilding the unit earlier this week, reports the Wall Street Journal. The employment freeze continues in weeks of poaching more than 50 AI researchers and engineers from its competitors.

The freeze took effect last week, but it’s not clear how long it will last. Meta may be working through Reorg, which divides its AI unit, Meta Superintelligence Labs, into four new groups. The TBD Lab is run by three groups, each focusing on research, product integration and infrastructure.

Meta confirmed the employment freeze in the journal, stating that it was “a basic organizational plan… after getting people on board and carrying out annual budgets and planning exercises.”

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s push to advance in the AI race sparked a serious war of talent. He personally called the top researcher and engineer, offering paid packages equivalent to nine figures, and gaining other startups or their leadership. Analysts warn that rising stock-based compensation costs could threaten shareholders’ earnings.
