Chinese electric car brand BYD has built the world’s fastest fully electric supercar. He destroyed previous records by hitting a top speed of 293.54 mph (472.41 km/h).

The record was set by BYD’s Yangwang U9 truck version in North Germany on August 8th in the ATP car test.

With a power-to-weight ratio of 2,960 horsepower and 1,341.5 horsepower per ton (1,217 horsepower per ton), the Yang Wan U9 truck version passed the previous EV speed record (431.62 km/h) set by the Rimac Never R in July.

The car is the young brother of BYD’s first fully electric supercar, the Yangwang U9, and has 1,300 horsepower and was launched last summer. The truck edition features a similar family to the standard U9 model and shares the same aerodynamic design.

It is also built on the same power system with four independent electric motors and four-wheel torque control, as well as a body control system. The body control system keeps it as flat as possible when speeding up, slowing down, or around corners.

Phosphorophosphate phosphate phosphate phosphate remains the same, and its flat rectangular shape allows for efficient cooling and increased energy density, a representative from BYD said on the company’s website. This battery can be charged from 30% to 80% in just 30 minutes.

To overtake the 233 mph (275 km/h) speed record that set the U9 in August 2024, BYD engineers have been incorporated into the battery and motor temperature control system tailored to extreme conditions. They also added “the world’s first mass-produced 1200V ultra-high voltage vehicle platform,” a BYD representative said in a statement.

This means, on average, the batteries, motors, power supplies, air conditioners and other components come from up to 1200 volts.

“I thought I had peaked last year. I wouldn’t have broken my record anytime soon,” said Mark Basen, a professional German racing driver who set the record. “But here we have the new technology in the same truck that made it possible.”

This new record keeps the EV supercar at a distance touched by its gas counterpart. Currently, the fastest road legal car is the Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut, which is estimated to reach a top speed of 310 mph (500 km/h), but although this has not been proven in the real world, the SSC Tuatara has reached 295 mph (475 km/h).
