The human skeleton (the internal framework that includes bones and cartilage) evolved over millions of years. It consists of an axial skeleton consisting of the skull and vertebrae, and an appendicular skeleton including the shoulders, hips, arms, and legs.

One of the main functions of the skeleton is to protect our soft internal organs, but another important function is to help us move. Bones play the role of levers with the help of muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Our jaws and teeth are also part of our skeleton and help us eat and speak. From the top of our parietal bone to the bottom of our smallest phalanx, our skeleton is an important part of our daily lives.
