WhatsApp can now draft AI-generated responses based on conversations

WhatsApp is rolling out a number of new features and updates, including the ability to use AI to generate suggested replies based on your conversations. The Meta-owned messaging platform is also releasing other features, including new ways to free up space and the ability to touch up photos with Meta AI.

Most notably, however, the app has updated its “Writing Help” feature, which helps users draft messages. First released last August, Writing Help already helps users rephrase, proofread, and adjust tone of messages. On Thursday, the Meta-owned company said in a blog post that the latest update will help users receive messages “properly.”

Meta likely wants people to use in-app technology when composing messages rather than external tools like ChatGPT. Of course, not everyone will want to use this new feature, as users are likely to prefer genuine, personal conversations with friends and family over AI-generated messages. (Using AI to compose an email is one thing, but using AI to send a message to a family group chat is another.)

The company claims that chats remain private even when users use Writing Help.

To access this feature, users tap the chat bar, select the sticker icon in the input field, and tap the pencil with a glittery dust icon to indicate the AI feature.

When it comes to freeing up space, WhatsApp now allows users to find and delete large files directly within a chat. This means users can delete what they don’t need without wiping the entire conversation. For example, you can choose to only erase media files when you clear a chat, while keeping your chat history intact.

The company also announced that users can now use Meta AI to modify photos directly within chats. This allows users to remove distracting objects in the image, change the background, apply new styles, and more.

Additionally, WhatsApp now supports the option to move chat history from iOS to Android as well as within the same platform. Additionally, users have the option to log in two WhatsApp accounts at the same time on iOS, which is already possible on Android.

WhatsApp’s stickers have also been updated so that when users type in an emoji, WhatsApp will suggest a specific sticker to exchange for a sticker.

WhatsApp says these new features are currently being rolled out and will be available to all users soon.
