Lucid blames poor first quarter sales on seat supplier issues

Lucid Group ended 2025 on a strong note, producing twice as many EVs as the previous year and reporting a 55% increase in sales. And now the first quarter of 2026 has arrived.

The company, which makes the Air sedan and Gravity SUV, said Friday that it sold 3,093 units in the first quarter, down 42% from the previous quarter and about 0.5% from the same period last year. More were built, about 5,500 in total.

Lucid said the drop in sales and the gap between production and delivery is not a demand issue. Rather, the company says that deliveries of the Lucid Gravity were suspended for 29 days due to quality issues with the supplier’s second-row seats.

A supplier issue has led Lucid to recall more than 4,000 Gravity SUVs. Lucid told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it discovered some of the SUV’s second-row seat belt anchors were not properly welded.

Lucid spokesperson Nick Twork confirmed to TechCrunch that the drop in sales was related to issues with suppliers. He said that due to unauthorized changes by the supplier, the company suspended sales of the Gravity for most of February to ensure proper quality of the vehicle before restarting. Twerk highlighted Lucid’s recent successes, saying, “After a record eight quarters, we delivered strong results in both January and March, nearly achieving year-over-year growth on our own.”

Lucid said in a financial filing on Friday that the issue has been resolved and appears confident the disruption will not affect production targets.

Lucid reaffirmed its previously announced forecast for production of 25,000 to 27,000 units this year. Lucid manufactured 18,378 EVs in 2025. This represents a whopping 47% increase compared to last year.

Lucid’s seat supplier problems come as the company prepares to begin manufacturing the first vehicles on a new, mass-market, low-cost platform. Lucid said the first vehicle will cost about $50,000, which puts it in direct competition with the upcoming Rivian R2 SUV and existing products such as the Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3, and Chevrolet Equinox EV.
