Apple introduces cheaper option for App Store subscriptions

Apple is giving App Store developers a new way to attract subscribers with low-cost plans tied to one-year contracts. The company announced Monday that it is introducing a new subscription option that allows customers to subscribe to a 12-month plan and pay an auto-renewing subscription fee on a monthly basis. This model allows developers to offer discounted rates to customers in exchange for more predictable long-term revenue.

This also corresponds to the number of developers who are already marketing annual subscriptions within their apps. App developers often display lower monthly prices to highlight the discount customers receive if they purchase an annual subscription rather than a monthly option. If users are on the fence about long-term contracts, the idea of getting a better deal may encourage them to move to an annual option.

Now, Apple is basically formalizing what these developers were already doing, so they can also create a set of policies for how these subscription offers are displayed so that they don’t mislead customers about the true cost of the transaction.

However, this option will not be available to developers in the US or Singapore at launch. Apple hasn’t explained this, but App Store litigation is still ongoing in the US over the details of a court ruling in a lawsuit with Epic Games over how Apple charges for subscriptions. Apple probably doesn’t want to complicate the issue further until it is finalized.

On the other hand, Singapore also has a sophisticated payments market with strong consumer rules, so it may have been excluded from the initial release.

Customers can view additional information about their subscription before finalizing the contract, such as payment and cancellation mechanisms. Since customers have agreed to a 12-month agreement, they can cancel their subscription at any time, but monthly payments will be debited from their Apple Account until the end of the subscription period.

Additionally, Apple said in its announcement that customers will now be able to easily see how many payments they have completed and how many payments remain for a particular subscription by viewing this information in their Apple Account. Apple will also send reminder emails and, if opted in, push notifications to notify customers about upcoming purchases before their renewal date.

This option helps customers get better value for money on their subscriptions, but it can also lock them into long-term plans if they’re wary of cancellation. These subscriptions auto-renew, so if a customer forgets to cancel before the renewal deadline, they may accidentally agree to another 12-month contract.

Developers can now configure this new type of subscription in App Store Connect and test it in Xcode. The new 12-month monthly subscription is available to customers around the world using iOS 26.4, iPadOS 26.4, macOS Tahoe 26.4, tvOS 26.4, visionOS 26.4 and later, and will be available with the release of iOS 26.5, iPadOS 26.5, macOS Tahoe 26.5, tvOS 26.5, and visionOS 26.5. In May.
