After tapping into a larger market for productivity tablets with color displays with the Paper Pro and smaller Paper Pro Move, E Ink tablet maker reMarkable is going back to its roots with a new monochrome device called the Paper Pure.

The new $399 Paper Pure is the six-year-old successor to the monochrome reMarkable 2, with more powerful hardware and updated software features that make it more competitive in today’s tablet market.

The Paper Pure’s display measures 10.3 inches diagonally, the same as the reMarkable 2, but the company says the new display is wider, making it easier to take notes and read text. Notably, the resolution remains unchanged between the two tablets, remaining at 1872 x 1404 pixels with a pixel density of 226 PPI.

The tablet also has 32 GB of storage, four times more than its predecessor, and weighs about 40 grams less, at 360 grams.

According to ReMarkable, Paper Pure is 50% more responsive than reMarkable 2, and the 3,820 mAh battery offers 30% longer battery life.

The company has added a number of new features to the tablet to bring it up to par with modern productivity tools, including support for web apps. With Paper Pure, you can sync your calendar, create and share notes for specific meetings, and more. Additionally, when you import documents from a cloud storage service, the online sync service automatically converts them into notebooks suitable for reading and annotating on the tablet itself. The company said it also has better handwriting search capabilities.

Paper Pure also integrates with Slack, so you can convert your handwritten notes to typed text and share them. It also works with the collaboration tool “Miro”, allowing you to share sketches and more.

The Norwegian company now plans to end production of reMarkable 2, but said it will continue to provide software updates and support to existing customers.

Paper Pure’s base model comes bundled with a stylus, and the more expensive $449 version comes with a premium stylus called Marker Plus, which includes an eraser feature and a sleeve folio of different colors. Users can order the device starting today, with shipping expected to begin in early June.

The company said it has sold more than 3.5 million devices to date and has 1.2 million subscribers to its Connect service, which offers unlimited cloud storage, exclusive templates, and the ability to create links to share notes and sketches.
