Discord announced Nitro Rewards on Monday. This will give Nitro subscribers access to other gaming and lifestyle brand offers at no additional charge.
Now, Nitro is offering upgrades to Discord, including more profile customization options, HD streaming, and the ability to upload files up to 500MB. Subscription is optional as you can easily use the platform without paying any fees. This is an intentional design choice on Discord’s part. But that also means user acquisition can be difficult.
“Nitro has always thought about how we can meaningfully upgrade the Discord experience without limiting it. [for free users] In every big way,” Discord co-founder and CTO Stanislav Vishnevsky told TechCrunch.
Nitro Rewards are available to Nitro ($9.99 per month) subscribers, but not to users on the Nitro Basic ($2.99 per month) plan. However, the appeal of Nitro Rewards can increase subscriber value and help retain subscribers.
Nitro Rewards will give you access to the base level of Xbox Game Pass at launch, allowing you to play over 50 PC and Xbox games, including Fallout 4, Stardew Valley, DayZ, and more. This slot also includes 10 hours of cloud gaming, allowing you to stream games from your PC or Xbox to other devices.
Nitro Rewards offers discounts of 15% to 30% on a rotating selection of gaming hardware from Logitech G, SteelSeries, and KontrolFreek. Discord plans to partner with more companies to offer similar offers in the future.
“Nitro is the biggest contributor to Discord’s revenue and has been growing steadily every year,” Vishnevskiy said. “This is about doubling down on that and delivering even more value again…I’m very grateful, to be honest.” [subscribers] for supporting us. But also from a business perspective, people perceive more value, so subscription retention also increases. ”
Originally conceived as a chat platform for gamers, Discord now plays a much larger role in online culture, serving as a community hub for all kinds of users, from crypto users building decentralized community projects to pub patrons organizing local craft nights to activists coordinating political protests. Discord also plays a big role in the tech community, with founders using the platform to convene beta testers and power users of their products and communicate more directly. The platform has grown to more than 90 million daily active users.
But this increased exposure means Discord must face the same complex online safety issues as larger platforms. The company is now preparing to introduce age verification measures as it faces further litigation over children’s online safety.
Update, 5/11/26, 3:00 PM ET: Discord initially told TechCrunch that Nitro Rewards are available to all Nitro subscribers. However, Nitro Rewards are not available at the Nitro Basic tier.
