Gone are the days when people would balk if you told them you met your partner online. Just as social media platforms have changed the way we interact with each other, dating apps have irrevocably changed the way we date. In fact, Mashable recently interviewed several couples who all met on dating apps, so it’s absolutely possible to find your match.
One in 10 partnered adults (married, living with a partner, or in a committed relationship) met their partner on a dating app or site, according to 2023 findings from the Pew Research Center. If you’re a young adult or LGBTQ, there’s a good chance you’ve met your significant other online. One in five adults under 30 and nearly one in four LGBTQ adults.

According to the same survey, nearly half (44%) of dating app users said the main reason they use dating apps is to meet a long-term partner. So if that’s you, you’re never alone when you see people lamenting on TikTok.

But with so many apps out there, from Bumble to eharmony, deciding which one to invest in can be difficult. And the debate over dating app culture can be unforgiving. In 2025, singles told Mashable that they want to meet potential partners in person, but are reluctantly turning to apps. While some companies, like Tinder, have seen revenue decline in recent years, Hinge is growing. But still, daters are lamenting even the most popular apps. A Kinsey scientist recently told Mashable where daters go wrong. It’s not about using dating apps as a tool to run a show. And they have already stopped self-optimizing.
Despite my complaints about The Apps™, there’s no denying that if you want to date from the comfort and safety of your own home, The Apps™ are the way to go. For example, if you’re an introvert or find it difficult to approach someone directly, the app can help.
What is the number 1 best dating app?
Given the variation in experiences with all dating apps, it’s hard to quantify which one is “the best.” Some people find spouses on Tinder, but others are disappointed when the other person is just looking for a hookup.
That said, if you’re looking for something serious, your best bet is probably an app with a large user base, options to indicate what you’re looking for in your profile, and filters to exclude people you really want to partner with. There are also apps like eharmony and Match where branding is all about finding your ultimate match. Both sites have been around for decades and have a reputation for helping users find spouses. Hinge, Bumble, and Coffee Meets Bagel also have a reputation for having more “serious” connections.
Depending on the type of relationship you’re looking for, you may also benefit from more niche apps. Take SilverSingles, an app for over 50s on our list. Of course, there are older people on apps like Tinder and Bumble, but you’re more likely to find someone your age if you’re in your own private space.
Which dating site is best for a serious relationship?
Mashable researched a few of the many dating sites (and apps) out there. These options are available to both Android and Apple users, so the type of phone you have doesn’t determine your options. From a financial investment perspective, some are free to use (like Tinder and Bumble), while others require a fee. It also includes a few “niche” options, such as the aforementioned SilverSingles and Elite Singles, so you get more than just a standard dating app.
