Bumble is the best dating app for women and non-binary people looking for casual romance that lets them set the pace. “Bumble is a useful app for women who want to avoid creepy stares and only hear from men they’re interested in,” Weiss told Mashable. It’s also a great option if you’re looking to find someone who’s open about wanting a fun, casual date or an intimate relationship without commitment.

If you’re tired of spam messages, Bumble puts you in the driver’s seat, but the way you start chatting is currently in flux. Historically, women had 24 hours to make the first move. Next, the app introduced “Opening Moves.” This allows you to set text or photo prompts that respond to matches and filter out low-effort interactions. However, depending on where you travel and where you live, you may end up reverting to making your first move manually. Bumble has removed the “starting move” feature in markets such as Mexico and Australia. CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd says the app is now moving away from forcing one gender to act first, but will somehow maintain the “essence” of women acting first.

No matter who sent the first text, Bumble is reimagining the entire experience with an overhaul of “Bumble 2.0.” In early May 2026, Wolfe Herd confirmed that Bumble would officially phase out Swipe. Launching in select markets in the fourth quarter of 2026, the iconic swipe mechanism will be replaced with what she described as “revolutionary.” Although the exact successor has not been disclosed, it is likely to be directly related to the new AI-powered concierge “Dates.” Have a private onboarding chat with Bee (the AI assistant) about your values and dating intentions, and the AI will identify compatible profiles and notify both users of the reason for the match.

As news of the AI assistant spread, users took to TikTok to complain that the app was turning into an artificial “hellscape.” Of course, Wolfe Herd responded via an Instagram post. She wrote that Bumble’s future “is not about automating love,” and that “the best AI should work quietly in the background, bringing real humans fully to the foreground.”

While the service is being rolled out, the app has already released AI profile guidance around the world and an AI photo feedback tool in the US to help you choose your best shots. Bumble is also hoping to catch users faster by updating its badges to include specific options like “ethical non-monogamy” and “intimacy without commitment,” allowing them to flag exactly what they want on their profiles.

Once your profile is set up, Bumble is testing new ways to help you meet people IRL. They’re currently testing a “suggest a date” feature in Canada that avoids the hassle. If you’re tired of the one-on-one setup, the app is also rolling out a paid group dating feature called “Plans.” To participate, you must pay a flat fee to attend a small, carefully selected group gathering in person, based in New York. Once the event ends, the app will prompt you to digitally match with the people you shared the vibe with. You can also use the “Instant Match” QR code to vet your real-life crush. If you meet someone cute at the bar, you can scan your code for an instant match. It may sound redundant, but you can check your partner’s stats (and verified status) before jumping into bed together.

However, it’s worth being upfront about your app’s problems. It faced backlash from users over reports of previously blocked or left-swiped profiles reappearing in their feeds. Even more concerning is the fact that a class action lawsuit was filed against Bumble in February 2026 over a “massive” data breach that occurred in January 2026. The lawsuit alleges that a hacker group called ShinyHunters used phishing attacks to steal more than 30 gigabytes of sensitive user files.

This compromised data reportedly includes names, social security numbers, and dating preferences, and samples have already been published on the dark web. To make matters worse, JPMorgan recently downgraded Bumble stock, citing slowing growth, accelerating revenue and declining paying users, and increased competition from rivals like Hinge. The analyst warned that economic recovery may not even be expected until 2027 (oh my!).

Despite these recent issues and a tough market, Bumble remains a standout for many users. Chat by text, audio, or video without spending a penny, and even free users have access to basic filters like age, distance, and verified profiles. Premium features (Bumble Boost or Premium Membership) provide advanced filters, but are not required to find potential hookups.
