Jay-Z’s rock has long been a fixture in his iconography and is a favorite of fans and family alike.
However, recently, the Grammy Award-winning artist moved away from custom hairstyles and adopted a more natural look. This is a decision inspired by her 14-year-old daughter Blue Ivy and her father Adonis Reeves. In a video shared by Secred on Father’s Day, founder Beyoncé Knowles-Carter revealed the motivation behind her husband’s new hairstyle and the products that helped keep his curls healthy throughout the process.

The seven-minute clip begins with a montage of Jay-Z with and without rock. “Everyone wants to know the details of Jay’s hair transformation,” Knowles-Carter begins. “Jay told me a few months ago that he was going to look into his roots and really dig into his rock for the Philadelphia show. He wanted to do this in honor of his father. His father used to rock fro, so he wanted to rock fro in honor of him.”
“I always thought it was beauty that was the real reason Jay grew his hair long was to show Blue that his hair was similar to mine,” she said, adding that when her daughter was 5 years old, she wasn’t very confident with her hair. At the time, Jay-Z had a round head, but ultimately decided to prove that his texture and Blue Ivy’s texture were the same.

The “Crazy in Love” artist went on to say that he wasn’t sure if he would be able to comb his hair, considering he had been shaving it for about eight years. That being said, his curls remain strong thanks to the care and time Jay-Z has put into his hair over the years. His secret sauce? Of course it’s Secred’s weapon.

To begin the lock-removal process, the “Empire State of Mind” artist reached for Secre’s Detangling Spray ($28), which is formulated with cellumide, honey, photofermentation, and phytoseal complex. He also used the Moisturizing Deep Conditioner ($40). Moisture Sealing Lotion ($39) and Hair and Scalp Balm ($36) made to soothe dryness. The tool used to brush his hair was a $19 parting tail comb designed with a stainless steel tail and fine teeth.
“Honestly, he’s one of Secred’s most loyal customers,” Knowles-Carter continued in the video. “His hairstylist was Nakia Collins. I believe that Jay’s focus on consistency, having used only Secred products for many years, was the key to cultivating and maintaining the health of his hair.”

Knowles-Carter entered the hair industry two years ago, bringing on her mother, Celestine “Tina” Knowles (also known as “Ms. Tina”), as vice chair of Secred. Last year, the brand entered more than 1,400 Ulta Beauty doors and debuted on the retailer’s website, marking its first retail partnership. Fast forward to 2025, and Secred has been named WWD’s Hair Prestige Brand of the Year at the annual Beauty Inc Awards, in recognition of its groundbreaking launch and far-reaching impact on the celebrity-backed beauty market.
