Daters are a bit fickle in their feelings about AI, with some saying that companion AI is a deal breaker, but they still use it to drum up messages to potential dates. But new research from dating app Hily suggests being a Luddite can be sexy.

A Hily survey of 3,500 U.S. Gen Z and Millennial daters found that 60% of Gen Z and 54% of Millennials would find someone very attractive if they admitted to never using AI to make personal decisions.

Meanwhile, 64 percent of Gen Z and 56 percent of Millennial daters believe they won’t date the people they date. Even more people (75 percent of Gen Z and 68 percent of Millennials) would be instantly turned down if AI were used to determine whether they should go on a second date.

Among Gen Zers who don’t want to date someone who regularly uses AI to make decisions, the top three makers use AI to analyze conflict in relationships (75 percent), process emotions like a therapist (69 percent), and seek career advice (56 percent).

Asking AI about private matters is also a red flag, the study suggests. 62 percent of Gen Z and 53 percent of Millennial daters in the US would not date someone who asked an AI if something about their sex life was healthy. The numbers for being uncomfortable discussing sex life with an AI on a date jump slightly (66 percent of Gen Z vs. 54 percent of Millennials).

Looking at the full survey responses, you can see that respondents were asked to respond on a gradient of “totally agree” to “totally agree” to statements such as “I would be uncomfortable if the person I was dating discussed my sex life with an AI.”

So while not all respondents reached these conclusions entirely on their own, the results are still telling. As people, including single people, continue to adopt AI, there is also a growing number of voices opposing its use, which is a red flag.
