The handheld battery-powered disinfector of MBR UV-C Light products offers thorough surface sanitization across a wide range of settings and has been proven to kill all bacteria within 10 seconds.

With infection prevention and control, the agenda is higher than ever in today’s post-Covid world, which means a broad and multifaceted cleaning regime is important in the public environment. In addition to standard routine cleaning using antibacterial wipes or microfiber fabrics, the so-called “superbugs” in healthcare environments, MRSA, C. It is important to consider bacteria that we cannot see, such as the rise of difficile. Over time, bacteria and viruses mutated, creating immunity to some chemical detergents, creating superbugs.

UK-based company MBR UV-C Light Products specializes in UV-C Light Disinfection Technology, providing a cleaner and safer environment for many settings. The product uses a specific wavelength of -253.7mn in the UV light spectrum, which is the fertility band. UV-C light breaks down bacteria’s DNA and prevents them from replicating. Launched in 2009, MBR was the first company in the UK, providing portable handheld UV-C devices to the commercial industry.

UV-C Light

Personal beginning

Founded by Rose Latchman-Bloom, the company has a very personal story behind its formation. In 2007, Rose’s husband was admitted to a London hospital with heart problems. While in the hospital, he contracts with e-coli, leading to a lung collapse, placed on a ventilator and told he would not survive. It took him six days to identify that it was e-coli that he signed.

Rose told the Innovation Platform: “I vowed to the doctor that he wouldn’t die. I’ll come to the hospital and nurse him to his health myself. That’s what I did. While I was there every day, I was in the staff. I’ve seen using the same wipes to clean multiple surfaces. Even during the recent pandemic, I’ve witnessed this practice in hospitals.

“My husband finally left the hospital and once he recovered, I began to think about the cleaning regime I witnessed in the hospital, believing that he was just spreading bacteria from one surface to another. From here I began researching techniques that can be used in conjunction with routine cleaning as a belt and brace approach to kill all bacteria and achieve the highest level of hygiene.

“We saw several methods, including plasma, ozone, and ultraviolet rays. After extensive research, we decided that a 253.7nm UV-C light spectrum was the best option and before importing handheld UV-C products I studied for two years. The fertility of UV-C is very different from the UV-A and UV-B light spectra.”

UV-C Miracle Wand

The company developed its flagship product, UV-C Miracle Wand, and tested it in the UK. The handheld disinfectant achieved a 99% murder rate of microorganisms, bacteria and viruses in 20 seconds on clinical testing. It has been proven to disinfect surface area in just 20 seconds. This was proven to be disinfected by slowly cleaning and disinfecting the cane on the surface.

This product has proven popular in commercial kitchens, hospitality environments and cleaning companies. Rose then attempted to sell her product to the hospital, which was filled with early resistance.

Rose explained: “The first hospital I approached was a hospital my husband had contracted to e-coli. I spoke to a microbiologist there, presented the data to support the product, and he shut me down. I realized I needed to educate people, so I started distributing information about technology, how it works, and its benefits.

“We have since been contacted by major food service and facility management companies that want to use the product on hospital or call center keyboards with multiple users of the same keyboard. To make it quick and easy to use with the keyboard, We designed a product for use with keyboards that can kill bacteria within 10 seconds.

UV-C Handheld Sanitiser® (UV-C Miracle Wand version 2)

Impact of the Covid-19 pandemic

The product was launched just before the Covid-19 pandemic broke out and had a major impact on the company.

Rose said: We retested it in the UK to prove that SARS-COV-2 can be specifically killed. It achieves a 99% kill rate in just 1 second and a 99.9999% kill rate in 5.6 seconds, making it an essential tool for fighting ongoing increases and mutations in SARS-COV-2 and superbugs Ta. Before the pandemic, little was known about UV-C technology and its benefits. But it has become a major tool in combating the Covid pandemic around the world.

“With this proven, we have gained unprecedented interest from everywhere, from dentists to private train companies, cruise liners and holiday homes. We’ve sold out almost every product.”
