The Ukrainian president meets his leaders at the Munich Security Conference amid a push to end the Russian-Ukraine war.
Ukrainian President Voldymi Zelenki calls for the United States and Europe to unite in support of Ukraine in the war with Russia.
Speaking at a security conference in Munich on Friday, Zelensky said the US, including former President Joe Biden, never considered Ukraine a member of NATO.
Before meeting with Russia, Ukraine would need a “security guarantee,” he said, President Donald Trump pushed both countries to find a quick end to the Three Years’ War.
Just before sitting with US Vice President JD Vance, Zelenskyy said he only agreed to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in person after the general plan was negotiated with US President Donald Trump.
The approximately 40-minute meeting between Vance and Zelenskyy did not have any major announcements detailing how to get out of Europe’s most deadly war since World War II.
“We want very peace,” Zelensky said. “But you need a real security guarantee.”
Vance said on his part that the Trump administration is committed to finding lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia.
Earlier this week, Trump overturned years of US support for Ukraine in a call with Putin, and after that, Trump said the two leaders would soon meet to negotiate a peace deal.
In Munich on Friday, some world leaders, including Conservative leader Friedrich Merz, are considered Germany’s next prime minister – on his side with the Trump administration.
“There was also an agreement that the road to lasting peace could be successful in the closest coordination between America and Europe,” Meltz said in a side job at the conference.
However, there was wider concern among other leaders at the summit.
“There is concern that there may be a contract that Washington effectively excludes not only Europeans but Ukrainians as well as Putin,” James Bayes, the diplomatic editor of Al Jazeera, told Munich. .
However, there was a severe warning from Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition Alexy Navalnay, who died in a Russian prison.
German Foreign Minister Analena Bearbock also expressed concern over the Trump administration’s proposal to revive Russia with seven major economies.
“As a G7 partner, I have repeatedly revealed this brutal Russian invasion over the past three years. There is no normal cooperation with Russia,” Baerbock said.
Just hours before Vance and Zelenskyy met, a warhead-armed Russian drone struck a protective shell at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant in the Kyiv region, the site of the world’s worst nuclear accident in 1986.
Zelenskyy and the United Nations Nuclear Agency have confirmed that radiation levels do not change.
Zelenskyy later told reporters in Munich that the attack was “a very clear greeting from Putin and the Russian Federation.”
