Amazon Web Services (AWS) introduced the first quantum computing chip, Ocelot. The news is alongside its big cloud rivals Microsoft and Google.

The cloud computing giant has long invested in the quantum computing space, which began in 2019 when Braket Quantum Computing-a-Service was launched in collaboration with industry players such as Quera and Rigetti.

Quantum computing is built on principles borrowed from quantum mechanics and leverages “quantum bits” (QUBITS) to perform complex calculations faster than traditional computers. Applications potentially include drug discovery, encryption and security, and AI.

Building quantum chips that can be run with reduced errors – currently, one of the gating factors in quantum computing is central to advance quantum computing as a whole.

Ocelot was developed in collaboration with California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and integrates two small silicon microchips stacked on top (pictured above). The company says the chip design could reduce costs associated with error correction by up to 90%.

“With recent advances in quantum research, that’s no longer an issue, but in practical cases, fault-resistant quantum computers will be available for real applications,” said director of AWS Quantum Hardware at Oskar Painter in a statement.
