Meta recently released a new video editing app for creators called Edit. This new app is designed to rival Capcut by Bytedance, the popular short video editing app used by many creators.

Meta first shared that he was working on editing in January after the refund-owned capcut was removed from the US app store when the Tiktok ban came into effect instantly. The app can then be returned online and downloaded, but as Tiktok’s future in the US remains uncertain, Meta is ready to take advantage of the future Capcut absence with the new editing app.

Create this guide to see the app and the various features it offers. Here’s an overview of how to compare with CapCut.

How to start the app

Editing is available for download on both iOS and Android. Once you download and open the app, you will be prompted to log in with your Instagram account.

From there you will see five main tabs: Ideas, Inspiration, Projects, Records and Insights. Ideas Tab gives creators space to write down new video ideas and store reels in their collection. The Inspiration tab has a hub for discovering trendy audio and other popular reels.

[プロジェクト]Tabs are where creators can save and revisit videos currently in progress. This tab is also where creators can upload videos from their phone’s camera roll. The Records tab allows creators to start filming video content within their editing. Finally, Insights Tab provides creators with an overview of how content is being performed by surfaceizing metrics such as views, reach, and follower counts.

Green Screen: Swap and edit the video background with just one tap.

Timeline: Accurately arrange and adjust clips.

Caption: Add automatic captions to your videos in multiple languages.

Audio Library: Add videos to videos from your Instagram library.

Cutout: Separate specific objects with precision tracking.

Animation: Turn static images into videos using AI.

Apply Everything: Apply filters, effects, transitions and adjustments to all clips at once.

Timeline Frame Rate Selector: Converts video to the required frame rate for increased playback smoothness.

Alignment Guide: Enables viewers to see important parts of the video when posting, allowing them to accurately position text, emojis, or other elements.

Beat Markers: Add auto-detected beat markers to help you adjust clips, text and overlays to audio when editing.

Filter: Choose from 30 different filter options to add a unique look to your video.

Transitions: Choose from 30 different transitions to connect different video clips in a seamless way.

How is editing different from CapCut?

Both editing and Capcut are great options for editing short videos, but there are some differences between the two services.

CapCut offers more robust editing options, including AI capabilities than editing. Of course, this is expected as the editing is much newer than Capcut. Meta is likely to continue building its editing over the next few months and years, so we expect to see more advanced features in the future. It is also worth noting that Capcut has a wider music library compared to editing.

Another difference is the fact that there is currently no subscription offering in the editing (for now), but Capcut is. CapCut offers a free version, but some of its advanced tools are locked behind paid subscriptions. Editing is free to use, but this could change in the future as Instagram head Adam Mosseri says later versions of the edits may contain paid features.

Additionally, CapCut is available online, but editing is only available on mobile. However, this may change in the future.
