Minneapolis (AP) – Graduate student at the University of Minnesota Immigration and customs enforcement He was detained for an intoxicated driving offence, not because he was not involved in the protest, federal officials said Monday.

“This has nothing to do with student protests,” Tricia McLaughlin, deputy secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, said in a statement. “The individual in question was arrested after the expiration of a visa by the state related to a previous criminal history of the DUI.”

News Student detention – and the lack of official explanation – sparked student protests and expressions of concern. Gov. Tim Waltz told reporters Monday that he spoke with Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem on Friday, but was still waiting for details.

Meanwhile, Minnesota State University Mankato officials said one of the students was detained on ice on Monday.

President Edward Inch said in a letter to the campus community that the student was detained in off-campus residences on Friday.

“There was no reason. The university has not received information from the ice. They are not requesting information from us,” Inch wrote. “I contacted elected officials to share my concerns and sought their help in stopping this activity within the learner’s community.”

Mankato School did not name students and gave them no student nationality or field of study. ICE did not respond immediately to requests for details of the case.

“This is deeply concerned about the pattern. Ice detains students with little explanation and ignores their right to legitimate procedures,” Sen. Tina Smith said in a statement. “I will continue to push the administration to answer these arrests and work to get answers from federal immigration authorities about this case.”

The University of Minnesota has also not been appointed as a student.

The student, who was detained in an off-campus residence on Thursday, was enrolled at the Minneapolis Campus Business School. University spokesman Andria Waclawski said the school had no further updates on Monday. She previously said they followed the student leads, respecting privacy requests and providing legal assistance and other support to students.

“The deep concern here is that no matter the situation, everyone in this country has a right to a legitimate process, and our concern is whether those legitimate processes are protected,” the governor said on Monday.

President Donald Trump’s administration cited a rarely vokeable law that grants the Secretary of State to revoke non-citizen visas that could be seen as a threat to foreign policy interests. More Half a dozen Its connection to the university is known to have been detained and deported in recent weeks. Most of these detainees have shown support for the Palestinian cause during campus protests against Israeli war in Gaza.
