Alphabet’s Waymo unit has received approval to expand autonomous riding services to more parts of the San Francisco Gulf region, including San Jose.

In March, the company submitted a request to the California Public Utilities Commission to obtain approval for its latest passenger safety plan. This is an important step to obtaining permission to operate unmanned vehicles in a wider area. On Monday, the proposed expansion was approved, allowing Waymo’s unmanned coverage to be extended from San Francisco to the Peninsula.

“We are extremely pleased to share that CPUC has approved applications to operate fully autonomous commercial riding services in almost everything in South Bay and San Jose!” the company wrote in an X post on Monday. “This will not change our business in the short term, but we look forward to bringing the benefits of Waymo One to the Bay Area in the future.”
