Angelina Jolie appears to have updated her “recession blonde” look with ash tones for the screening of her new film Couture in New York City on Tuesday night.

Outside the Whitby Hotel, the 51-year-old actress posed in a black viscose silk Tom Ford dress with a plunging sweetheart neckline and fabric draped to her feet. Jolie’s hair was blown out, grazing the right side of her head. Her hair color makeup, with dark, dull roots and a honey blonde body, resembled the viral “recession blonde.” It was a hair trend that exploded into TikTok’s beauty stratosphere last summer, detailing the decision many women made to grow out their natural roots to save money after years of maintaining their hair bleached or platinum blonde.

This look is low-maintenance and requires little, if any, time spent using foil at the hair salon. The roots will either grow out on their own, or quickly remove the jet-black color to accelerate the darkening process. Viewed from behind, Jolie’s brunette coloring appeared to hang far beyond the top of her head, with a platinum dye hue that migrated from her roots to her narrower sections.

In the past, Jolie has hired stylist Massimo Cerini to revitalize her hair. But Ms. Cerini wasn’t in town Tuesday to develop her aesthetic. Instead, the Hollywood star teamed up with Renato Campora and topped her hair with Parfum de Marly Valaya Hair Perfume. “A modern interpretation of Veronica Lake’s glamor, this look was designed to enhance the elegance of the dress with a deep side part and soft waves that frame the face. While maintaining a sophisticated and timeless silhouette, volume was concentrated at the roots to create lift and movement,” Campora said in an official statement.

Although similar in their presentation, recessional blondes are not “old money blondes.” It is its antithesis. Recession blondes are the proverbial red flag for the economy and how it’s causing people to cut back on luxury spending. This fits into a broader conversation online centered around the universal concept of “recession indicators,” which are signs that the economy is headed toward the red. In addition to the decline in consumer spending, others include the prevalence of reversal gentrification, increases in second-hand goods purchases, and rising unemployment rates.
