Apple is scheduled to release the upcoming iPhone 17 series on September 19th in most countries around the world. However, the release of ESIM-only iPhone Air is behind in China due to regulatory issues regarding the approval of embedded SIMs.
Apple’s website says that all three China’s national network providers (China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom) all offer ESIM support for iPhone Air, but the timing of releases will be subject to regulatory approval. Pre-orders for other new mobile phones in the lineup will begin on Friday.
According to the South China Morning Post, Apple told local media it would work with regulators to bring the iPhone Air to China “as soon as possible.” The report mentioned a post by China Mobile on social network Weibo. This states that the network has enabled ESIM services on mobile phones, but no release date was mentioned.
China’s Telecom has posted a re-note about launching its own ESIM service on September 19th, when the iPhone 17 line is scheduled to be released. However, the post was subsequently deleted, SCMP noted.
Apple did not immediately return a request for comment.
