Several others were injured in the incident in West Germany, and one person in custody is in custody, according to a police spokesman.

At least one person was killed and others were injured when a car crashed into a crowd in Mannheim, West Germany, Germany, police say they are asking the public to leave the downtown area.

Police spokesman Stephen Wilhelm said the driver Monday plunged into a group of people in Paladeplatz, a pedestrian square in Mannheim.

He said “several people” were injured, but police still couldn’t specify how many people were injured or how badly they were injured.

“We can confirm that one assailant has been arrested,” he said. “We cannot provide information yet as to whether there are any more perpetrators.”

Paradeplatz, the main square in the downtown area, has a population of 326,000 and is located on the edge of Mannheim’s pedestrian street, 85 km (53 miles) south of Frankfurt.

Mannheim University Hospital said it was prepared for a possible mass casualty case, the German news agency DPA reported. Hospitals are implementing disaster and emergency plans to prepare for the care of those injured.

The incident comes the day after Mannheim hosted the Street Parade, the main event of the annual Carnival celebration. Many people spent a long weekend celebrating the carnival across Germany.

Several violent attacks have been seen in German cities, including stimulation stabbing and car filtration attacks.

Last month, a man took his car to a trade union demonstration in the south of Munich city, killing a two-year-old girl and her mother.

In December, a Carlaming attack targeted the Christmas market in the eastern city of Magdeburg, killing six people and injuring hundreds.

Mannheim itself was a scene of a stabbing attack in an anti-Islamic rally in which a police officer was killed last May and five other people were injured.

Before Monday’s incident in Mannheim, Home Minister Nancy Pheaser said the celebration was happening “with high security precautions.”

She cancelled her visit to Rose Monday’s parade in Cologne due to events in Mannheim, a spokesman for the Minister.
