Police say a murder investigation has been launched after a fatal shooting in Sweden’s city of Uppsala.

At least three people were killed in the shooting in Uppsala, Sweden, police say.

In a statement Tuesday, police said they received a call from the public who heard noises when they heard gunshots sounded like fire had been fired near Vaksala Square, about 60 km (37 miles) north of the capital Stockholm.

Emergency services were on the scene and a murder investigation has been launched, police added.

Swedish public television station SVT said the suspect escaped on a scooter.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remained unknown, with no immediate signs of motivation.

Police also did not provide details regarding the alleged assailant.

Scandinavian countries have suffered from a wave of gang-related violence for over a decade, including the gun violence epidemic.

The right-wing minority government came to power in 2022 on a promise to tackle gang-related violence.

In February, 10 people died in Sweden’s most deadly mass shooting in Orebro.
