The case of Erin Patterson, who was accused of killing three people with toxic beef Wellington, took the country into custody.

The trial of a woman accused of killing three elderly people after serving toxic mushrooms for lunch began in Australia.

Erin Patterson, 50, is facing a ju judge trial in the courtroom of Latrobe Valley Magistrates in Southeast Australia after being allegedly served beef wellington mixed with toxic mushrooms to four guests, including estranged in-laws, in 2023.

The quartet’s three survive, and Patterson is charged with murdering his mother-in-law, stepfather-in-law Donald Patterson, and Gale’s sister Heather Wilkinson.

Prosecutors have dropped charges regarding the attempted murder of Heather’s husband, Ian Wilkinson. Heather’s husband recovered for nearly two months at a hospital in Leongasa, a town of about 6,000 people, about 135km (85 miles) from Melbourne.

Patterson pleaded not guilty to all counts.

The ju judge’s choice began in court on Tuesday. It is expected to begin Wednesday morning to grab Australia and open up debate over the incident that made headlines around the world.

This case generated a series of podcasts and television documentary series about Australian streaming service Stan.

Six courtroom seats reserved for media are allocated on daily votes. Dozens more are expected to see the minutes in the overflow room set up in the courthouse.

The court is open to the public, but the lawsuit will not be aired. The exam is expected to run for 5-6 weeks.

The Victoria Supreme Court has imposed strict guidelines on reporting on the case to ensure a fair trial.
