The new electrolyzer will produce green hydrogen from renewable energy sources and is a step toward establishing a German hydrogen center in Chemnitz. Chemnitz-based energy supplier Ainz Energy has received around 1.6 million euros for the construction of hydrogen electrolyzers and the conversion of existing natural gas pipelines to use green hydrogen from renewable energy. Along with the construction of the plant, Saxony is supporting the further development of the first of four new hydrogen centers across the country, which began operations in Chemnitz last year. “This project makes an important contribution to the strengthening of Chemnitz as a research…
Significant new funding opportunities have opened up for researchers working at the cutting edge of semiconductor and quantum technology. Through the HTSM call entitled “Heterogeneous Development Solutions for Semiconductors and Scaling Quantum Technologies”, NWO and Netherlands High-Tech are inviting research consortia to submit ambitious and collaborative proposals that strengthen the Netherlands’ technological leadership. Strategic investments in key national technologies Semiconductor and quantum technologies are the cornerstone of the Dutch government’s national technology strategy, underpinning future advances in computing, communications, security and industrial competitiveness. To accelerate both fundamental insights and real-world applications, NWO and Dutch High Tech have jointly contributed €11.85…
The UK Government has committed £200m to local cancer care to address gaps in screening uptake and reduce inequalities in screening in deprived areas. Patients in disadvantaged and underserved areas will have access to potentially life-saving early cancer diagnosis through a cancer screening postcode lottery initiative. Communities across England will benefit from major investment aimed at reducing inequalities in cancer screening and detecting more cancers earlier. Health and Human Services Secretary Wes Streeting explained: “In 1948, the NHS was founded on the promise that everyone should have access to the best possible care, regardless of their ability to pay or…
European Space Agency (ESA) project scientist Johannes Sahlmann spoke to editor Maddy Hall about the Gaia Space Telescope and the discovery of the Galactic Wave. Gaia, a scientific mission carried out by the European Space Agency, aims to improve our understanding of how our galaxy, the Milky Way, functions and evolves. To accomplish this, Gaia will map approximately 2 billion stars and other celestial objects. Although these represent only about 1% of the Milky Way’s total stellar content, they create an extensive collection of data from which information about the galaxy as a whole can be extrapolated. Although we can’t…
Recent studies have revealed the staggering economic and environmental burden of PFAS contamination in Europe, highlighting the need for urgent action to prevent further damage. PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), also known as “forever chemicals,” persist in the environment and in humans for decades, so early intervention is critical. According to the report, if current PFAS pollution levels remain unchecked until 2050, the total cost to the European Union could reach an estimated €440 billion. These costs result from a combination of health impacts, environmental remediation, and damage to natural ecosystems. Exposure to PFAS has been linked to serious health…
The 5G-HUB project enables resilient 5G services through TN-NTN integration and seamless vertical handover. As modern society increasingly relies on digital services and secure communications, the need for resilient and ubiquitous network infrastructures that can guarantee service continuity even under extreme operating conditions is becoming increasingly apparent. In particular, mission-critical services targeting areas such as public safety, civil protection, emergency management, defense, and humanitarian operations require significantly higher levels of reliability, availability, and quality of service than traditional commercial communications. Within this scenario, the 5G-HUB project is positioned as a European initiative aimed at exploring and demonstrating new approaches to…
Ravi LakshmananJanuary 30, 2026Artificial intelligence/economic espionage A former Google engineer accused of stealing thousands of confidential company documents to build a startup in China has been sentenced in the United States, the Department of Justice (DoJ) announced Thursday. Linwei Ding (also known as Leon Ding), 38, was convicted by a federal jury of seven counts of economic espionage and seven counts of trade secret theft for stealing more than 2,000 documents containing trade secrets from tech giants related to artificial intelligence (AI) technology for the benefit of the People’s Republic of China (PRC). “Silicon Valley is at the forefront of…
Veronique Royer and Didier Jacqueman of the Atomic Energy Agency have stressed the need to strengthen and better coordinate nuclear safety research around the world. The expected increase in global nuclear energy capacity in the coming years will require a concerted effort to address the nuclear safety challenges that may arise from the introduction of new designs, including a wide range of small modular reactor (SMR) designs. This need is further amplified by the recent closure of critical nuclear safety research infrastructure, such as experimental reactors, reducing available expertise and capacity. Without globally coordinated action, the gap between research needs…
