The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has decided to withdraw its appeal against Ripple Labs and put an end to a four-year legal battle over whether XRP should be classified as security. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse is called a big win not only for the company but also for the crypto industry as a whole. That said, the broader impact on cryptocurrency surveillance remains uncertain. The dispute allegedly began in 2020 when the SEC sued Ripple and two executives and implemented $1.3 billion of unregistered securities offerings. The lawsuit caused a sudden sale, with XRP sinking between about 25% and…
Mortgage rates began to rise in 2022 after hitting record lows at the start of the pandemic, and it hasn’t been a big deal since. With the 30-year mortgage rates above 6.5% today (2.49% in 2020!), buying a home is not achievable for many people. One Denver-based startup will help change that. Founded in 2022, Multiply Mortgage originally gave high-tech employees access to some of the value of their stock compensation while their employers are still private. Interestingly, however, founders Michael White and Gautam Gupta observed that most employees of Square, Opendor, Durdasch and Uber alumni – use liquidity provision…
During a recent dinner with a San Francisco business leader, I made a chilled comment in my room. I hadn’t asked my meal buddies anything I thought was very fake. It’s simply whether they thought today’s AI could one day achieve human-like intelligence (i.e. AGI). It’s a more controversial topic than you think. In 2025, there is no shortage of high-tech CEOs offering a bull case for large-scale language models (LLMS) that allow power chatbots like ChatGpt and Gemini to achieve human-level or superhuman intelligence for almost a period of time. These executives argue that highly capable AI results in…
Billionaire Elon Musk, the driving force behind President Donald Trump’s Office of Budget Reductions, has broached the delicate issue of reducing social security costs for the TV channel Fox business. Musk told host Larry Kudlow, a former Trump economic adviser, that the government’s accountability agency estimated federal fraud in 2024 was “$50 trillion.” While mentioning waste, “Most federal spending is qualifications. Using the word “exclusion” in the same breath as “qualification,” raises an alarm among Trump and Musk’s democratic critics. White House press director Karoline Leavitt said during a news briefing on March 11 that Musk mentioned waste reduction, fraud…
The site has an interactive map that displays the name, address and phone number of Tesla owners, as well as dealer locations. Instead of a standard cursor, users navigate the site with images of Molotov cocktails. This is an unmistakable nod to its intentions. Elon Musk denounces DogeQuest in a post on X, calling it “extreme domestic terrorism” to promote attacks on Teslas nationwide. What is doggequest? DogeQuest has established itself as a platform of protest, claiming to support anti-Tesla activities by exposing the identity of the Tesla owner and the company associated with the company. The site’s operator said…
Judge Jesse Furman says efforts to deport Palestinian rights advocates are “exceptional” and require “careful” review.A US federal court has rejected President Donald Trump’s administration’s efforts to dismiss the legal challenge to detain Palestinian rights activist Mahmoud Khalil’s detention and deportation. A graduate student at Columbia University and a legal permanent resident, Halil has been detained by the government since March 8th last year to force him to participate in the Gaza campus protests. On Wednesday, Judge Jesse Furman ruled that Halil’s legal request for judicial review of Halil’s detention, known as habeas corps. The Trump administration has asked the…
Google has officially unveiled its Pixel 9A smartphone, a new mid-range phone that will be available for sale for $499. The biggest change to the A-Series smartphone is because the latest models throw away the camera bar on the back of the phone. The newer model comes with Google’s tensor G4 processor, so the smartphone has got a chip upgrade, but its predecessor has a G3 chip. The 9A also promises over 30 hours of battery life, features 8GB of RAM and comes with either 128GB or 256GB of storage. It will be available from April and comes in four…
