Bioforcetech makes significant progress in PFAS removal

Bioforcetech, a leading Bay Area-based environmental technology company, has reached a significant milestone in PFAS removal.

Independent testing has confirmed that its advanced Sigma pyrolysis system removes 99.98% of PFAS compounds from all waste streams, including biosolids, wastewater, and exhaust gases.

This result represents the most comprehensive validation of system performance to date.

Extensive testing confirms high efficiency

This rigorous study, conducted by engineering experts at Brown and Caldwell, included sampling at eight points throughout the Bioforcetech process.

The results revealed that the thermal oxidizer, located before the exhaust gas scrubbing stage, is where the majority of PFAS destruction occurs. This highlights that carefully optimized design and operating conditions of the system are key to achieving near-complete removal.

This test builds on previous evaluations, including an internal evaluation by Bioforcetech and a study by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Advanced analytical techniques were used at each step of the process. EPA 1633A for solids, OTM 45 for exhaust gases, and high sensitivity testing in partnership with North Carolina State University.

The overall results confirmed that only 0.02% of PFAS compounds remained anywhere in the system, demonstrating unprecedented effectiveness in removing these persistent chemicals.

Bioforcetech’s pyrolysis process goes beyond removing PFAS and converts treated biosolids into a sustainable value-added product called OurCarbon®.

Testing confirmed that all PFAS originally present in both wet and dry biosolids were completely removed from this final product.

This dual benefit of producing PFAS-free output while producing usable carbon material makes Bioforcetech’s technology a game-changer for wastewater treatment facilities seeking environmentally responsible solutions.

Dario Presezzi, CEO of Bioforcetech, added: “This milestone further proves that pyrolysis of biosolids is a clear solution to the PFAS problem.

“The results of this test give Bioforcetech even more confidence in our thermal process to reduce the burden on biosolids in wastewater plants and produce value-added products.”

A new standard for wastewater management

Bioforcetech’s PFAS removal success offers a promising avenue for municipalities and industrial facilities struggling with environmental and regulatory challenges from PFAS contamination.

It has been demonstrated that combining heat treatment with sustainable resource creation can protect water and air quality while producing valuable by-products.

As PFAS continue to threaten communities around the world, innovations like Bioforcetech’s pyrolysis systems are paving the way for safer, more sustainable, circular approaches to managing biosolids and other waste streams.
